Feeling nervous before a date, worrying about an exam, and experiencing increased anxiety before a big presentation is normal. But sometimes, teens experience so much anxiety that it impairs their daily functioning. Parents of anxious teenagersâ€"as well as the teens themselvesâ€"are often desperate for help. But, many people worry whether anxiety medication is safe for teens. Types of Anxiety Medications for Teens Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, also known as SSRIs, are the most commonly prescribed medication for anxiety in children and teens. These may include medications such as Prozac (fluoxetine), Celexa (citalopram), Zoloft (sertraline), and Lexapro (escitalopram). SSRIs increase levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that carries signals between brain cells. SSRIs block the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making it more available. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, known as SNRIs, may also be prescribed to adolescents with anxiety. SNRIs may include medication such as Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Effexor XR (venlafaxine). Like SSRIs, SNRIs impact neurotransmitters in the brain. SNRIs block reabsorption of two neurotransmitters in the brainâ€"serotonin and norepinephrine. Common Side Effects of SSRIs and SNRIs Many teens don’t experience any side effects when taking SSRIs or SNRIs. And the side effects they do experience are often mild and usually go away within the first few weeks of treatment. The most common side effects include: Dry mouthNauseaDizzinessExcessive sweatingHeadache Other possible side effects may include: Loss of appetiteTirednessConstipationInsomniaChanges in sexual function, such as reduced sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, or difficulty achieving orgasm It’s important to report any side effects to your teen’s doctor. If one medication isn’t working or it’s causing serious side effects, your teen may need to change medications. FDA Warnings About SSRIs and SNRIs The FDA issued a warning in 2004 that antidepressant medications, such as many of the SSRIs and SNRIs, that are often used to treat adolescent anxiety, may increase suicidal thoughts and behavior in a small number of children and adolescents. No suicides were reported in the studies that led to the warnings. But in clinical trials, the rate of suicidal thinking or suicidal behavior was 4 percent among patients receiving an antidepressant, as compared with 2 percent receiving the placebo. To address this concern, a black box warning was added to the prescriptions. Parents and teens are educated about the potential risks and teens are monitored closely with frequent appointments. Some experts have been critical of the FDA’s black box warning. Critics warn some people may not get the help they need for fear the medications are unsafe. Consequently, the warning may deter parents from getting help for their children. Other Medications Used to Treat Anxiety in Teens Although SSRIs and SNRIs are most commonly used to treat anxiety in teens, other prescriptions may be used. Benzodiazepines may be prescribed to teens with severe anxiety. They are usually short-term treatments. Benzodiazepines are less commonly prescribed because they have some associated dangers. Teens may grow dependent on them and benzodiazepines may be abused. Stopping them suddenly could lead to withdrawal symptoms or even  seizures. Occasionally, physicians may prescribe other medications to treat anxiety,  such as antihistamines or atypical antipsychotics. When Teens Should Seek Help for Anxiety There are many different types of anxiety, such as social anxiety, separation anxiety, panic disorder, generalized anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. There are also many different types of phobias that may impact your teen’s daily life. Anxiety becomes problematic when it affects a teen’s social, occupational or educational functioning. Here are a few examples of times when anxiety becomes problematic: A teen thinks everyone is always staring at her. She refuses to eat lunch in the cafeteria and she avoids talking in class.A teen survived a near-fatal car accident on a rainy evening. Several months later, he continues to have nightmares and flashbacks. He refuses to get in a car when it’s raining.A teen has started experiencing panic attacks. She’s worried they will happen when she’s at school. She has started refusing to go to school. According to the Child Mind Institute, 80 percent of young people with anxiety don’t get treatment. That’s unfortunate because anxiety is treatable. And sometimes, that treatment includes medication. When to Use Medications for Anxiety For mild to moderate functional impairments, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry recommends deferring the use of medication. Teens and their parents are often educated on anxiety and the best strategies for managing symptoms. They may also be referred for cognitive behavioral therapy. If those strategies aren’t effective in reducing the impairments, or if a teen has moderate to severe anxiety, medication may be used to manage the symptoms. As with all medications, prescriptions used to treat anxiety have risks. They are prescribed, however, when a physician or psychiatrist thinks the benefits outweigh those risks. How to Help an Anxious Teen If your teen is struggling with anxiety, talk to the doctor. Describe your concerns and ask about your treatment options. While some primary care physicians and pediatricians feel comfortable prescribing anti-anxiety medications to teens, others may refer children to psychiatrists. Psychiatrists are specialists who treat mental health disorders. If you have concerns about your teen’s diagnosis or treatment plan, seek a second opinion. Talking to another professional can help you decide on the best course of action. Always educate yourself about any medications your child is taking. Read the handouts, ask questions, and talk to the doctor and the pharmacist. Monitor your teen’s compliance with taking medication. Make sure she’s taking it as prescribed. Skipping doses or doubling up on pills could be harmful. Attend your teen’s appointments. Talk to the doctor about any concerns you have and learn about your teen’s progress.

Food Insecurity in America - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 898 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/02/15 Category Health Essay Level High school Tags: Food Insecurity Essay Did you like this example? Poverty is an ongoing issue affecting millions of Americans every day. Not having the ability to support their families, people who are impoverished live very difficult and stressful lives. In addition to not being able to pay bills, families whom are impoverished also struggle with food security. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Food Insecurity in America" essay for you Create order The food you eat produces fuel for the body, and it is extremely important to engage in healthy habits when it comes to food and eating. According to the article, Feeding America: Food Insecurity and Poverty in the United States— with findings from the USDA and U.S. Census Bureau, due to a lack of funding and income, approximately 40 million Americans are unable to afford adequate food. Among this 40 million, it was calculated that 12 million of these people are children (Feeding America). Insufficient food intake causes several other health issues that could be avoided with a cleaner, healthier diet. People who are below the poverty line, however, don’t have the access to adequate food. Tis is due to low incomes, at an average of, â€Å"~$25,100 for a family of four† (Feeding America). The thesis of this article could be considered the title, Feeding America: Food Insecurity and Poverty in the United States— with findings from the USDA and U.S. Census Bureau. All of the findings regarding supporting arguments, illustrations, data, and anecdotes relate back to the main idea presented in the title. There is also support given based on where the information in the article is coming from. In the article, there are several examples of data the help in supporting the main claim relating to food and poverty. For example, the poverty rate for individuals that are disabled is, â€Å"2 times the national rate† (Feeding America). This means that people who have a disability are more likely to be impoverished than people who don’t. In addition, â€Å"rural food insecurity among households has remained higher than urban rates,† (Feeding America). Meaning that living in rural areas, people are more lively to live amongst poverty. Another statistic states that single women households are 2.5 more likely to live in poverty or food instability than an average family. Unemployment and poverty also have a strong correlation with food insecurity. Although, the rates of food insecurity, poverty, and unemployment have declined over recent years. Defining who is food insecure is very difficult, as there are many aspects that effect this instability. In total, there are approximately 15 million households, 6 million with children, and 3 million with a senior that are food insecure (Feeding America). Depending on location and race, there are several statistics that correlate to food insecurity. People of color are half as likely to experience food insecurity, and 40% of households that are unable to afford adequate food live in southern states (Feeding America). Income and poverty also relate directly to an ongoing concern with affording food. With the median income rising, people still have trouble balancing the costly aspects of life; such as, healthcare, food costs, bills, transportation, and living arrangements (Feeding America). However, among the 40 million food insecure Americans, 10 million are unable to receive any aid due to having incomes that are considered too high (Feeding America). In order to assist these individuals, it is important to maximize the use of federal programs supporting food security and fighting nati onal poverty, such as SNAP and WIC in order to keep these programs alive and running (Feeding America). There are no valid exceptions to the data presented in this article. The conclusion of the article provides helpful government programs that assist impoverished families with the costly living conditions when they are considered under the poverty line. After explaining the various statistics relating to food insecurity and poverty, it was effective to conclude with the programs that assist these families. Not only were the programs explained, but the article expressed the importance of these programs, and how much they truly help families in need. In keeping the federal programs afloat, it is important that they are funded and used to the maximum efforts in aiding needy families of America (Feeding America). Prior to reading this article, I did not know much about poverty or food insecurity. This is not something that I have ever had to worry about, so it was interesting to me to understand the circumstances that these individuals face on a daily basis. I am also more aware of the programs that assist these people, and hope that they stay valid. It surprised me that almost half of Americans are food insecure. I don’t think there are any arguments that could be considered. These facts presented by the USDA and U.S. Census Bureau are daunting and alarming, and there is a lot of work to be done to decrease poverty and food insecurity in America. The point of view presented in the article informs my own beliefs, thinking, and communication with others as it educated me on a topic that I did not know much about prior to reading the article. I always though that poverty was a lot less of an issue, however, it effects 40 million Americans (Feeding America). In the past on Thanksgiving, I went to a local food kitchen for community service, so I always thought the amount of impoverished people was a lot lower. I hope to see this number decrease, and hope to get back to the food kitchen in order to help people in need.

Characters Of The Novel The Relay Of Stories - 1163 Words

Characters aid in the relay of stories, because they communicate values, morals, and situations that are difficult to talk about or catapult the audience into a world of fantasy. Their ability to capture the attention of the audience is essential to a good tale. Therefore, a reader must be able to feel the environment as surely as if they were actually in it. This is where the six types of characters set the tone for the story. The protagonist is usually a positive character, like the hero who saves the town from an evil fire breathing dragon. Of course, this is not always the case, as the protagonist can be the evil dragon who comes to some kind of life changing realization. The reader can usually recognize personal values or morals in†¦show more content†¦As a result, the Grinch is both the antagonist and protagonist. A deeper development of characters is essential to the story line, so the types of characters usually have a more depth. First, there is the round character, which is well developed through their actions, thoughts, and words (or lack of words). As the reader, we discover what motivates them by their about their concerns, wants/needs, doubts, and suspicions. In â€Å"AP,† it was evident that something substantial lacked from Sammy’s life. He had doubts about his life and its predictable plainness. He worried about his parents and how his quitting his job would affect them. Without the author’s insight into his psyche, the reader would be clueless as to the conflict that waged within him. Coincidentally, completely opposite to the information downpour that a round character provides; the flat character is void of any substance. This type of character is little more than a story filler, there is no back story to gain a deeper insight into what drives them. They serve as a general audience within the story, comparable to the artificial backdrop that photographers use in their pictures- it sets the tone and gives the illusion that the model is in a specific environment. Next, is the dynamic character that is directly affected by the events of the story. For instance, the metamorphosis can be languid or instantaneous, virtuous or unscrupulous. Just as LT. Renaissance period Free Essays

In the Renaissance period, there had been evidence that mentally people did already exist. In this period, the beliefs which mainly came from the Middle Ages were dragged into renaissance period. This is the ideology that people under mental disorder or people who are mentally ill are those who were casted by or cursed by evil spirits (Administrator, 2006). We will write a custom essay sample on Renaissance period or any similar topic only for you Order Now Certain people under this kind of disorder where locked away during this time, they are being placed in cells and they are not being taken care of by any physicians. These people are said to be tortured instead of being cured, they are often being locked up inside the closets and even in cages because of their being disobedient caused by their unknown mental disorder (Administrator, 2006). On the year 1493-1541 Paracelsus had this ideology that mental illness is not really cause by evil spirits but then people during this time did not took his idea as merely fact and instead the people continued the way on how they treat mentally disordered ones. It is explained that people with this kind of problem during the renaissance time only talk and interact with people of their same disorder. It is because they are the ones who are considered dangerous and incompetent (Administrator, 2006). As a result to lack of care and attention for seeking cure, people who are mentally ill during the renaissance period are experiencing difficulties which cause their mental health to be more of a problem because instead of being reversed, they become more mentally ill (Administrator, 2006). The cruel treatments such as torture for the mentally ill people were lessened during the 17th century where the first mental hospital was established in England. People in this ward were viewed like animals in the zoo during this time and there were no further studies made to cure such mental problem until the mid 18th century (Administrator, 2006). Willam Ramsay, biography of Essay Example For Students

Willam Ramsay, biography of Essay William RamsayWilliam Ramsay was born on the second of October, in the year 1852. William, and his parents, William and Catherine, lived in Glasgow, Scotland. William Ramsay performed his work in his native town, until 1870 when he went to Tbingen and earned his doctorate in 1872. When returned to Scotland later that year, he became an assistant chemist at the Anderson College in Glasgow. Eight years later, he was appointed principal and professor of chemistry at London University, which held until his retirement in 1913. Ramsays earliest works were in the field of organic chemistry. In his early experiments he showed that the alkaloids are related to pyridine, which he synthesized in 1876 from acetylene and prussic acid. Some of his first work was related with the study of a new Bismuth mineral, which was only recognized as a metal until the 18th Century. William Ramsay also verified Roland Etvs law for the constancy of the rate of change of molecular surface energy with temperature. Ramsay published his work in accordance to Dobbie, on the decomposition products of the quinine alkaloids. William was very successful and submitted many contributions to physical chemistry, being mostly on Stoichiometry and Thermodynamics. He also commenced the 1880s with his work with Sidney Young on evaporation and dissociation. We will write a custom essay on Willam Ramsay, biography of specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In 1892, a British physicist named Lord Rayleigh asked chemists to explain the difference between the atomic weight of Nitrogen found in chemical compounds and the heavier, pure Nitrogen found in the atmosphere. Ramsay and Rayleigh were communicating daily with their results to solve their curiosity of the unknown gas. Rayleigh determined that a liter of pure Nitrogen weighs 1.2505 grams, but a liter of Nitrogen gas generated from air, by removing the Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, and the water vapor, weighed 1.2572 grams. This led to Ramsays prediction that there must be another unknown element. William and Lord Rayleigh devised a chemical reaction to remove Nitrogen and Oxygen from air. To isolate the unknown, they would repeatedly pass atmospheric Nitrogen over heated Magnesium. This would remove all of the real Nitrogen, intern leaving the solid, Magnesium Nitride or Mg3N2. When the two chemists performed this reaction, Mg + N? Mg3N2 + ?, the remaining gas which is approximately 1% of air, was named Argon from the Greek word for lazy or inactive. Ramsay and Rayleigh announced their discovery of Argon to the British Association in August of 1894. William Ramsay searched for sources of Argon in the mineral kingdom. He discovered Helium instead of Argon in a uranium-bearing mineral. Until this point, Helium was only known to exist on the sun. Ramsay determined that this element was in fact Helium by viewing the minerals bright yellow stripe under a spectroscope which corresponded with the Helium that is on the sun. Helium was originally named by Lockyer. This led Ramsay to believe that there is a new group of elements. Ramsay was guided by Mendeleevs periodic table and began work with the British chemist, Morris W. Travers. Argon was now available in much larger quantities, through experiments by Claude in Paris, by the fractional distillation of air. Ramsay prepared a large quantity of Argon and fractionated it. He isolated three new elements. The first was called Neon, meaning The New One. The second was named Krypton, meaning The Hidden One, and the third one was called Xenon, meaning The Alien One, or The Stranger. Each of the new elements were unique by examining their spectrum. Then in 1910, Ramsay discovered Niton, or Radon in the radioactive emissions of radium, which was the last of the noble gases. .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 , .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .postImageUrl , .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 , .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373:hover , .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373:visited , .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373:active { border:0!important; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373:active , .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373 .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0519943430a548041a12984433906373:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Nuclear Weapons Essay ThesisSince the gases that Ramsay discovered, had remarkable inertness, or completely unreactive, led to their use for special purposes. Helium was used for lighter than-air crafts instead of Hydrogen because Hydrogen is highly flammable whereas Helium is unreactive. Also, Argon was used to conserve the filaments in light bulbs. The inertness of the gases contributed to the Octet Rule in the theory of chemical bonding. Linus Pauling believed that compounds of the noble gases should be possible. Ywis, in 1962 Neil Bartlett prepared the first noble gas compound which is Xenon Hexafluoroplatinate, XePtF6. Currently most compounds of the Noble gases have been found. William

The Mistake of Using Job Descriptions to Write Your Resume

The Mistake of Using Job Descriptions to Write Your Resume I have received many inquiries from clients who think it’s a good idea to copy their current job description into their resumes, and/or copy the job description of the position they’re applying for into their resumes. I STRONGLY recommend against using job descriptions to write your resume. Heres why neither of these tactics is effective: 1. Copying Current Job Descriptions Your current job description is just a list of job duties. The cardinal rule for resumes in today’s job market is to write your resume as a list of achievements and accomplishments, NOT as a list of job duties! I would go so far as to say that your job description has very little to do with what you actually do and accomplish in your position. I’ll take myself as an example. The job description for my position at the University of Wisconsin Law School said that I counseled students on their legal career search. It didn’t say what my success rate was, or how creatively I worked with students’ cover letters and resumes, or that I created a PowerPoint presentation on Resumes for Law Students. It did not mention the 5 job search resource manuals I created for various big cities across the United States, or the positive feedback I got from the students I worked with. It was my job to put these successes, which were nowhere to be found in my job description, into my resume. They spoke much more to what I can accomplish in any similar position than a statement that I â€Å"assisted students with resumes and cover letters.† You don’t need to emphasize the job duties in your job descriptions to write your resume. Instead, focus on the things you’ve done that will be relevant and impressive to the reader. 2. Copying Future Job Descriptions A lot of people make the mistake of copying the job description of a job they want into their resume, thinking they will score high with Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) systems. While you might get past the ATS with a resume like that, once a human lays eyes on your resume, you’ll land in the â€Å"no† pile. Copying and pasting requires no creativity and, ironically, makes it appear that you did NOT do the things you claim you did. Using job descriptions to write your resume just shows a hiring manager or HR person that you can cut and paste. Some people have copied and pasted the job description of their targeted position using white â€Å"invisible† text. Warning: Once a resume goes through an ATS system, that text will no longer be invisible! So you take a risk, once a human is looking at your resume, of being seen as trying to play the system. Not good. 3. The Right Way to Write Your Resume Instead of copying and pasting job descriptions in order to capture keywords, FIRST write your resume to highlight your accomplishments. Create the best document you can create. AFTER you have put together a great resume, THEN see what tweaks you can make to include some of the keywords from the future job description. For instance, I worked with a client applying for a Senior IT Director position. The position description listed â€Å"Develop and approve exceptions to policy†¦Ã¢â‚¬ His finished resume did not have the phrase â€Å"exceptions to policy† in it, but in reality, he worked with exceptions to policy regularly. He was able to add this phrase into an already existing bullet regarding his program management accomplishments. For more on how to use keywords in your resume, see my article,  Top 20 Tips on Writing ATS-Compatible Resumes for ATS Systems. In general, when crafting a winning resume, truth and honesty are the best policy. Don’t get lazy or think you’re â€Å"working the system† by using the cut and paste functions on your keyboard. What will get you an interview is your unique accomplishments. And another important thing that will get you a job is your integrity. Focus on those and you will see success in your job search.
