Types of Anxiety Medications for Teens Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, also known as SSRIs, are the most commonly prescribed medication for anxiety in children and teens. These may include medications such as Prozac (fluoxetine), Celexa (citalopram), Zoloft (sertraline), and Lexapro (escitalopram). SSRIs increase levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that carries signals between brain cells. SSRIs block the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making it more available. Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, known as SNRIs, may also be prescribed to adolescents with anxiety. SNRIs may include medication such as Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Effexor XR (venlafaxine). Like SSRIs, SNRIs impact neurotransmitters in the brain. SNRIs block reabsorption of two neurotransmitters in the brainâ€"serotonin and norepinephrine. Common Side Effects of SSRIs and SNRIs Many teens don’t experience any side effects when taking SSRIs or SNRIs. And the side effects they do experience are often mild and usually go away within the first few weeks of treatment. FDA Warnings About SSRIs and SNRIs The FDA issued a warning in 2004 that antidepressant medications, such as many of the SSRIs and SNRIs, that are often used to treat adolescent anxiety, may increase suicidal thoughts and behavior in a small number of children and adolescents. No suicides were reported in the studies that led to the warnings. But in clinical trials, the rate of suicidal thinking or suicidal behavior was 4 percent among patients receiving an antidepressant, as compared with 2 percent receiving the placebo. To address this concern, a black box warning was added to the prescriptions. Parents and teens are educated about the potential risks and teens are monitored closely with frequent appointments. Some experts have been critical of the FDA’s black box warning. Critics warn some people may not get the help they need for fear the medications are unsafe. Consequently, the warning may deter parents from getting help for their children. Other Medications Used to Treat Anxiety in Teens Although SSRIs and SNRIs are most commonly used to treat anxiety in teens, other prescriptions may be used. Benzodiazepines may be prescribed to teens with severe anxiety. They are usually short-term treatments. Benzodiazepines are less commonly prescribed because they have some associated dangers. Teens may grow dependent on them and benzodiazepines may be abused. Stopping them suddenly could lead to withdrawal symptoms or even  seizures. Occasionally, physicians may prescribe other medications to treat anxiety,  such as antihistamines or atypical antipsychotics. Teens and their parents are often educated on anxiety and the best strategies for managing symptoms. They may also be referred for cognitive behavioral therapy. If those strategies aren’t effective in reducing the impairments, or if a teen has moderate to severe anxiety, medication may be used to manage the symptoms. As with all medications, prescriptions used to treat anxiety have risks. They are prescribed, however, when a physician or psychiatrist thinks the benefits outweigh those risks. How to Help an Anxious Teen If your teen is struggling with anxiety, talk to the doctor. Describe your concerns and ask about your treatment options. The Mistake of Using Job Descriptions to Write Your Resume I have received many inquiries from clients who think it’s a good idea to copy their current job description into their resumes, and/or copy the job description of the position they’re applying for into their resumes. I STRONGLY recommend against using job descriptions to write your resume. Heres why neither of these tactics is effective: 1. Copying Current Job Descriptions Your current job description is just a list of job duties. The cardinal rule for resumes in today’s job market is to write your resume as a list of achievements and accomplishments, NOT as a list of job duties! I would go so far as to say that your job description has very little to do with what you actually do and accomplish in your position. I’ll take myself as an example. The job description for my position at the University of Wisconsin Law School said that I counseled students on their legal career search. It didn’t say what my success rate was, or how creatively I worked with students’ cover letters and resumes, or that I created a PowerPoint presentation on Resumes for Law Students. It did not mention the 5 job search resource manuals I created for various big cities across the United States, or the positive feedback I got from the students I worked with. It was my job to put these successes, which were nowhere to be found in my job description, into my resume. They spoke much more to what I can accomplish in any similar position than a statement that I â€Å"assisted students with resumes and cover letters.† You don’t need to emphasize the job duties in your job descriptions to write your resume. Instead, focus on the things you’ve done that will be relevant and impressive to the reader. 2. Copying Future Job Descriptions A lot of people make the mistake of copying the job description of a job they want into their resume, thinking they will score high with Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) systems. While you might get past the ATS with a resume like that, once a human lays eyes on your resume, you’ll land in the â€Å"no† pile. Copying and pasting requires no creativity and, ironically, makes it appear that you did NOT do the things you claim you did. Using job descriptions to write your resume just shows a hiring manager or HR person that you can cut and paste. Some people have copied and pasted the job description of their targeted position using white â€Å"invisible† text. Warning: Once a resume goes through an ATS system, that text will no longer be invisible! So you take a risk, once a human is looking at your resume, of being seen as trying to play the system. Not good. 3. The Right Way to Write Your Resume Instead of copying and pasting job descriptions in order to capture keywords, FIRST write your resume to highlight your accomplishments. Create the best document you can create. AFTER you have put together a great resume, THEN see what tweaks you can make to include some of the keywords from the future job description. For instance, I worked with a client applying for a Senior IT Director position. The position description listed â€Å"Develop and approve exceptions to policy†¦Ã¢â‚¬  His finished resume did not have the phrase â€Å"exceptions to policy† in it, but in reality, he worked with exceptions to policy regularly. He was able to add this phrase into an already existing bullet regarding his program management accomplishments. In general, when crafting a winning resume, truth and honesty are the best policy. Don’t get lazy or think you’re â€Å"working the system† by using the cut and paste functions on your keyboard. Women were confined to the dominion of their husband within the domestic sphere, their lives to be lived within the space of home and social experience. Males were in dominion of the public sphere, their lives expanded to include business and politics with women not all owed, by law, to participate in their lives, which included their economic status where financial and real estate was concerned. There is some debate about the representation of separate spheres within literature. ... Some of this might be observed with â€Å"A Doll’s House†, although not outside of a believable relationship between a man and a woman, there is a distinct point made about the nature of male oppression. As Helmer uses diminutive language towards his wife, he sets the nature of their relationship through treating his wife like a child, a ‘doll’ that is coddled and protected into an unrealistic framework in which he dominates all important aspects of their life together. Helmer says to her â€Å"The same little feather head† and â€Å"Hasn’t Miss Sweet-Tooth been breaking rules in town today?† (Ibsen 12, 14). In regard to her spending habits he says â€Å"It’s a sweet little spendthrift, but she uses up a deal of money† (Ibsen 14). He treats her like a child, speaking to her in a manner that is condescending and without any sort of recognition of her adult place within the marriage. Nora is not a complete person to him, but someone who has no sense and must be considered without any regard to the concept of her opinion. He determines what is important within the household and when he fails to see some of the aspects of domestic life that must be attended, she must find ways to manipulate their relationship in order to accomplish what must be done. Her choices are limited because she is not considered to have a valuable place within their household, other than that which he has determined she is qualified to hold. A Critique of â€Å"Thank You for Smoking†¦.?† Peter Brimelow’s article â€Å"Thank You for Smoking†¦.?† is an essay that looks at a rather extreme perspective on smoking. Brimelow starts off by describing the many actions that are taken against the tobacco industry; he writes that in some states, the government is trying to make the tobacco industry pay certain health care costs. However, he then goes on to state that smoking may actually be good for one’s health. He uses various sources to show that smoking has positive effects on our bodies; he states the decrease in risk in numerous diseases. Brimelow uses medical journals to show that smoking decreases the risk of diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. He also talks about some of the ways smoking enhances certain skills, â€Å"A battery of studies show that cigarettes really do stimulate alertness, dexterity and cognitive capacity† (Brimelow 141). Brimelow does pick a tough subject to talk about, but for the most part he does a good job writing his article and distributing information to the reader to support argument. In the beginning of Brimelow’s essay, he lists a number of organizations that are fighting against the tobacco industry, such as the Food & Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. Then out of nowhere he throws out his major claim, which is the thesis or the main point of the essay (McFadden 41). Every paper has a major claim; it is the central idea of the paper. The major claim says, â€Å"smoking might be, in some small ways, good for you† (Brimelow 141). This is a rather shocking thesis, due to the fact that generally when we think of smoking, we think of something very negative to a person’s health. Brimelow’s major claim is very difficu... ...own to be bad. However, even though the essay may not be persuasive in most cases, it is, for the most part, well written. Brimelow starts off the essay a little slow, he does not give the reader a sense of direction in the beginning, but the body definitely informs the reader. The body of the essay is filled with information supporting his thesis, and his values are very clear. His essay may not persuade many, but it is definitely informative and well written. Rudolf Virchow

Rudolf Virchow was born on October 13, 1821, in Schivelbein, as the only child of a farmer. His early interest in the natural sciences and broad humanistic training helped him get a high marks throughout school. In 1839, he earned a military fellowship to study medicine at the Freidrich Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, Germany. Virchow had the opportunity to study under Johannes Muller, gaining experience in experimental laboratory and diagnostic methods.In 1843, he received his medical degree from the University of Berlin and went on to become company surgeon at the Charite Hospital in Berlin. He was one of the first to describe white blood witch is also known as Leukemia. Later he became professor and director of the pathological institute. Virchow’s was known for his findings that a whole organism does not get sick. Only certain cells or groups of cells get the infection.In 1855, at the age of 34, he published his now famous aphorism â€Å"omnis cellula e cellula† (†Å"every cell stems from another cell†). With these resuts, Virchow launched the field of cellular pathology. He stated that all diseases involve changes in normal cells, that is, all pathology ultimately is cellular pathology. This insight led to major progress in the practice of medicine. It meant that disease entities could be defined much more sharply. Diseases could be characterized not merely by a group of clinical symptoms but by typical anatomic changes.Rudolf has changed how doctors can find out when a person is sick. His main point is that only certain cells or groups of cells are the ones that make the person sick. I have learned that now thanks to Rudolf’s invention in the medical field, we now know where to locate the infection to make it easier for doctors to cure you. This really helps because without these findings people would still be sick and die from whatever they have been infected with.
